Reports Of Recent Meetings

Waitarere. —The recent meeting was the occasion for celebrating the institute’s first birthday. Mrs. Aldrich welcomed many visitors including Mrs. Hume, president of the Plimnierton Institute. Competitions were held and an interesting programme was presented. Four members, Mesdames Stanley, Coleman, Thornton and Montgomery, produced a playette titled “Oh, My Hat.” This was cleverly acted and. was enjoyed by all. The president received many bouquets and messages. At afternoon tea the birthday cake was cut. The cake Was made by Mrs. Coleman, iced by Mrs. Hood, and the candle was lighted by a Paekakariki member. Visiting presidents united in blowjyg out the one candle. Mrs. Hume cut the cake and in an address extended good wishes to members. Otaki. —There was a large attendance presided over by Mrs. W. G. Taylor. Miss Manz was appointed ' treasurer for 1940. Mesdames Allen and O’Halloran were appointed delegates to the halfyearly council meeting. A lecture on the art of stage make-up was given by Mrs. Victor Lloyd and there was a playreading by the drama circle. A successful birthday party was held earlier in the month.

Foxton. —Mrs. J. R. Middleton presided over a large attendance. Mrs. Marlin, Kopane. gave a talk on Holland and her peoples, and as an interlude Miss Martiji gave a Dutch national dance in- costume. Mrs. J. F. Riches sang. Mesdames Seabury and R. Easton were thanked for thgir donation of an iced fruit cake for competition to raise funds for soldiers’ parcels. Porirua.—The resolutions for the forthcoming annual general meeting were discussed, and a delegate was elected. Mrs. Lambert demonstrated stocking mending, which members followed with keen interest. Mrs. Colley spoke on British Red Cross work. Mrs. Wright, secretary, retiring after six years’ service, was the recipient of a gift and floral tribute. Floral sprays were also presented to Mrs. Lambert and Mrs. Colley. The glee circle gave an item whiifli was enjoyed by all. A guessing competition for a prize donated by Mrs. Windley was won by Mrs. J. Philp. Mrs. Thompson presided over a large attendance of menijiers. Te Horn.—The annual meeting was held in Uie local hall, Mrs. Blitkc presiding over a fair attendance. Mennlbers expressed regrot at losing Mrs. Blake’s valuable services, as she had taken up residence in Levin. Good wishes were extended to her. Tiie election of a committee was held in abeyance till the next meeting, because of the absence of a number of members. Competitions were hold.
