CLOSE WATCH BY U.S.A.

Diplomatic Activity LONDON, May 2. Diplomatic activity in Rome and Washington and the close watch the United States is evidently keeping on events in the Mediterranean have aroused great interest in England. The general opinion in this country is that the United States Government does not expect Italy to enter the war at the moment. At a Press conference the Assistant Secretary of State, Mr. Sumner Welles, said that the State Department was giving no consideration whatever to the idea of warning Americans to leave. The Press conference was held after Mr. Welles and Mr. Roosevelt had had an interview with the Italian Ambassador to Washington earlier in the day. The United States Chamber of Commerce passed a resolution urging immediate action to bolster up the country’s defences, but called on Congress to reaffirm the determination of the United States to keep out of the war.
