FAILURE TO FURNISH INCOME RETURNS
Taxation Department’s Difficulty
Failure to furnish returns of income caused a considerable amount of extra trouble to the department, and the total number of defaults involved many lliottsauds of pounds, said Dr. N. A. Foden, who appeared on behalf of the Commissioner of Taxes whim four persons were charged in lite Magistrates' Court, Wellington, yesterday, will) failing to furnish returns of income. The Act also prescribed a minimum penalty of £2 and a maximum of £lOO for failure to do so, said Air. Foden. Tite prosecutions had been brought to
serve as a warning to those people who relied on default assessments. Their obligation was to send in a proper return every year. In the cases now before the Court, defendants were persistent defaulters. Mr. W. W. Cook, who appeared on behalf’ of one of the defendants, said his client had been very busy, but admitted that he should have attended to tite matt ci 1 . Another defendant was represented by Air. W. P. JJollings, who said his client had had a great: deal of sickness in Hie family and since August of last year the responsibilities of his employment had been increased.
