Women's Institutes In South Wellington Federation
The annual council meeting of the South Wellington Federation of the New Zealand Women’s lusunites was held recently in Levin. The federation president, Mrs. .1. Hume, expressed pleasure at, the large gathering, and extended a hearty welcome to the Dominion president. Miss A. Kane, and to the president of the Levin branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union, Mrs. Colquhoun.
The president of the Levin institute, Mrs. H. Powell, welcomed those present on behalf of the institute. Members of the South Wellington executive on the stage were, Mesdames Synuott (vice-president), G. F. Maclean (bon. secretary), A. Wright (bon. treasurer), F. Tabor (voluntary organizer), L. Tunnicliffe (Press correspondent), Scott, and Miss D. Cotter (vicepresident). Mrs. Hume received bouquets from the executive and from each of the 15 institutes in the federation. Miss Kane and Mrs. Colquhoun and all federation members were given shoulder sprays.
The half-yearly report and balancesheet were presented by Mesdames Maclean and Wright, respectively, and were unanimously adopted. Mrs. Hume congratulated officers on their work, and paid a tribute to the executive for their loyal support during a strenuous year. Mrs. Wright reported on the success of the recent drama school held by the federation and conducted by Mrs. Victor Lloyd, Wellington. The roll call showed that all institutes in the federation had delegates present, a fact which was most encouraging. After the luncheon adjournment, .Miss Kane appealed to those present to be prepared for whatever the future might bring. She congratulated everyone on the magnificent response to the request of the Patriotic Council for parcels for soldiers, and said she was convinced that as long as the need arose women would respond nobly, as they had always done in the past. Miss Kane thanked all for their wonderful work in the Women’s Court at the Centennial Exhibition. The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs. Synuott (Otaki) ; vicepreiident, Mrs. Hume (Plimmerton) : hon. secretary, Mrs. H. .Powell (Levin) ; bon. treasurer, Mrs. A. Wright (re-elected) ; voluntary organizer, Mrs. F. Tabor (re-elected) ; Press correspondent, Mrs. Leslie Tunnicliffie (re-elected), Mesdames Bryant (Kimberley), Robinson (Manakau), and Miss Stocker (Paraparaumti). Mrs. Hume, on retiring after four years service as president, was presented with a reading lamp as a token of the regard in which she was held. Mrs. -G. F. Maclean, retiring secretary, Miss D. Cotter, retiring vice-pre-sident, and Mrs. Scott (Porotawhao), were the recipients of posies and gifts in appreciation of their work for the federation. Mrs. Synuott was congratulated on her election as president. During the afternoon the Levin singing circle gave two part songs, Mesdames Inglis and Bradbury sang duets, and the Misses Mills and Margaret Taylor presented an amusing sketch.
