“THE SORCERER”
Gilbert And Sullivan Opera At a recent meeting of the newly-form-ed Gilbert and Sullivan Society held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. Davidson, Moeller Street, several new members were elected, bringing the total membership up to 28. The subject for discussion was one of the earlier operas “The Sorcerer.” Miss Erica Baillie produced some interesting notes on the first performance of this work in Wellington. The opera was performed for the first time by a company called the English Opera Company, which presented “The Sorcerer” in the Academy of Music, at one time the Oddfellows’ Hall, on Lambton Quay, a site now occupied bv the T. and G. Building, on September 24, 1879,. two years after it was first performed in London. The principals on that occasion were Misses Annie Leaf and Heath, and Messrs. Riccardi, Crain, Harding and-Hodson. Later the opera was performed in St. Peter’s Schoolroom by the first Wellington Operatic Society. The evening was enlivened by the playing of several numbers from “The Sorcerer.”
