SOCIAL EVENING

British Drama League

The first of a series of social evenings for the 1910 season of the Wellington area of the British Drama League was held recently in the University Women’s Club rooms, Lambton Quay. There was an attendance of over 50 members and visitors.

The speaker for the' evening was Madame Maria Dronke, an actress who has made her name on the European stage and who is now resident in Wellington. She spoke on her experience of the theatre, and gave advice to amateur players. Madame Dronke said that in New Zealand there was a lively and widespread interest by amateurs in dramatic art, as in England, which differed from the Continent, where the real talent was mostly absorbed by the professional stage. Dealing with the origin of the drama, she outlined its progress from the days of the early Greeks. Madame Dronke gave very practical hints to,members on amateur play-acting and concluded by giving recitations from John Masefield’s works and the “Cradle Song” by Tennyson.

The evening ended with rr competition, followed by supper.
