Evenings For Mercantile
Marine Visitors
‘Enjoyable evenings were given on Saturday and Monday at the rooms of the British Sailors’ Society for men of the Mercantile Marine. On Saturday the evening took the form of a social with games. Supper was served by helpers, and a pleasant evening was brought to a close with cheers for the members given by the large number of men present. On Monday a programme of items were presented by members of St. John’s Presbyterian Church to a capacity house, standing room being at a premium. Every item,- was greeted with applause, the performers having to respond'with numerous encores. The men from the ships in port presented to Mrs. A. G. Gifford a fountain pen and a Clock set in the form of a ship’s wheel, in appreciation of the pleasant times that had been spent with the society while in Wellington. Mrs. Gifford suitably replied. Supper was served by the women helpers, and the evening was brought to a close with the National Anthem and doxology.
