EUROPE’S MAY DAY
War Work Not Interrupted LONDON, May .1. There were none of -the usual May Day celebrations in Germany, and no public speech by Herr Hitler, for the first time since he came into power. In France work continued in the factories in accordance with the decision of the French trade unionists. The Premier, M. Reynaud, broadcast a message to French workers. “I am addressing you as a military chief,” he said, “for you are an army. If you were to relax, even for one day, it is the soldiers at the front, who would suffer.” In Britain the British National Council of Labour described May Day as a day of hope. Britain, France, Scandinavia and the Dominions were standing together determined to end aggression and restore freedom to the world.
