WELL-KNOWN HORSEMAN TO RETURN

Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, May 2, Two well-known horsemen of a few ycar& bflek, E. Shtiw finfi. -H. Were, will be seen in the saddle again at Riccarton om Saturday, after lengthy absences. Shaw, who is now ■with J. B. Pearson, will be riding Shanghai Lily and Greenbank, trained by Pearson, and H. Were will' have the mount on Iceland bipar. Shaw was recognized as one of the most accomplished jumping riders in the Sou tn Island, but was unfortunate with falls, and, following a serious injury at Ellerslie, retired from the profession. Were was also a good flat rider, , and he can go to the scale at a light weight. Three Riccarton apprentices, J. H. Fraser, L. W. Cornyns, and S. Green, will be having their first'mounts in the races on Saturday. Fraser is apprenticed to W Cameron, and has sbiuped so well in track work that he has 'been engaged for four horses. Cornyns is attached to D. Cotton’s stable, and will make his debut on Princess Minerva. Green was brought back from Sydney by F. Roberts.

Bred In New Zealand. At Ascot (Melbourne) recently the winner of the Carlisle Trial Hurdles, two miles was the Dominion bred six-year-old Dolphin, a son of Philamor and the Paiadin —Pineta mare Rapina, a sister to Rapine, who was sold to Australia with this foal at foot some years ago. Dolphin was topweight with 11.0, and was one of the outsders of the field. According toa Melbourne critic, Dolphin’s performance was not really impressive, and be does not look a National prospect on that showing, his success being due to his being the best of a poor lot. Dolphin has had a number of owners in Australia, anfl is now being trained for Mrs. E. Nusbaae by W. Lowe, who prepared that great old Steeplechaser Agricola, hero of many battles at Flemington.
