EGMONT MEETING
Steeples To Clarion Call AMIGO’S SUCCESS Dominion Special Service. HAWERA, May 2. The Egmont races were held today in fine weather. The course was in splendid order and there was a large attendance. The totalizator handled £18,171, compared with £20,266 on the corresponding day last year. . Clarion Call gave a perfect exhibition of jumping to lead all the way in the Egmont Steeplechase. The cup went to the topweight Amigo, who received the run of the race and was always on the bit. Aluuga took the open sprint. Easy for War Lap. War Lap made hacks of his six opponents in the Tangahoe Hurdles. He and Devon were out 15 lengths ahead of the others half a mile from home, and Devon was unable to reach War Lap, who won easily by six lengths. Ruling Star and'Karere-Nui did bent of the others. Aussie Ra moved up from the rear at the half mile, but pursuit was obviously hopeless after crossing the last fence and be finished fifth. I 1 ull of Scotch retired at the end of a mile. Three Lengths Clear All the Way. Cold Dale with 71b. allowance, made short work of the hacks in the Telegraph Handicap. He began brilliantly and was three lengths clear all the way. Tavoy, Veldette, Taiho and Counter followed the leader to the distance and Counter did best of them, beating Tavoy by a head for second, but five lengths behind the winner. Tea Drop came from well back for fourth, just ahead of Taiho, Viracious and Veldette. Clinch was always a long way back. Alunga’s Good Effort. Alunga confirmed the view that he was unlucky at Waverley by decisively beating a strong field in the Hawera Handicap. Ninth, five furlongs from home, he had improved hie position to follow Sleeveless. Gay Seton, Endorsement and Clessamor into the straight. He stayed on solidly to win by a short length from Red Cat, who came from behind to cut down Sleeveless on the post for second money. Gay Seton was fourth, with Endorsement, Rehearsal, Fiancee, Notium and Kaiwaka next. Alunga’s effort was a good one, as he did not begin too smartly, and had to do it all the way. Red Cat finished from a long way back. Majority resuming after a spell, was in the rear all the way. Polished Exhibition. Making his first appearance as a steeplechaser since he won the Grand National Steeplechase 18 months ago, Clarion Call gave a polished exhibition of jumping to lead all the way and win the Egmont Steeplechase. Lady Stella was the only runner who could make any sort of rage of it with Clarion Call, but he was always master of the situation and won by 10 lengths. Lactose came on for a poor third, after En Tour and Brigadore had fallen on the last circuit, when trying to get up to the leader. Disturbed was pulled up early in
the contest. Red .Sun and One Whetu tailed off early and never improved. A Bad Start. The Hack Scurry was marred by a bad start in which the favourite Tuatara was standing sideways when the tapes were released and was hopelessly lett. Judgment was another to suffer in a poor dispatch. Zest and Hum-a-Song were pacemakers throughout, and in a. desperate struggle Zfst got the verdict by a head. Flying Eagle and Boden Park dead-heated for third, and Sea Link, Judgment, Calliope and Parlato were best of the others. Tuatara iMt so much "round at the start that he never got in a position to lodge a semblance of a challenge. . . . Decisive Victory.
Amigo scored a decisive victory in the Mcßae Cup. Ridden by Ashley Jenkins, be received the run of the race, lying behind Galteemore and Gaily till turning ■for home, where he took the lead and ■won nicely. Winsome Lu, who moved up on the burn, finished, well for second, three-quarters of a length from Amigo. These two wore dear of Dark Eagle, who finished well along the rails to hold off a late run by Homily, Tidewaiter, first up after a spell, went a good race to finish fifth, on terms with Mataroa, who, with Hunting Cat, was prominenit beside Amigo three fuilongs ifrom home, but neither could, maintain the position when pressure went on. Galteeimore and Gaily both faded out at ■the last furlong. Return to Form.
Ruatitl staged a return to form when he flashed up along the fence to win the Tawhiti Handicap from Davilia, when that filly looked to have the race won. She was unludcy dirawing the outside of 17 runners at the barrier, as she had to be hard ridden all the wav. She was third behind Veldette and Colossal Chief at the home turn, with City Song and Minority behind her. She was in charge at the last furlong, and looked a certainty till Ruatitl drove through along the rails and gained a narrow victory. City Song ran a good race for a close third, and Sieglinde was fourth, with Flamberge, Colossal Chief. Dynasty, and Il unto next. Results TANGAHOE HURDLES, of £175.
