HOSPITAL FINANCE
Wellington Estimates RECEIPTS MAY BE MORE According to the Department of Health, the Wellington Hospital Board should have added another £lO,OOO to its estimated receipts for the 1940-41 financial years, said tho chairman, Mr. J. Glover, at a meeting of the board last night. The estimates were passed by the board recently and submitted to the department for approval. They had since been returned. If the board did add another £lO,OOO, said tlie chairman, it. would mean a reduction in the Government, subsidy more than a reduction in the levy ou contributing local authorities. This sum represented a fairly substantial reduction in the subsidy, but not very much in the levy. From information received within the past week or two the board would be required to spend a tremendous amount of money during the next year or so. There were such questions as purchasing equipment and the provision of emergency wards or new hospitals to be considered. Even if new buildings were not ready till the following year, the equipment for them must be purchased in advance. “Every penny will be required during the next year,” Mr. Glover added, when referring to various extensions to the board’s present services which would have to be put in hand. All these extensions would mean expense out of the maintenance account. Mr. A. H. Carman said the board should adhere to its estimates. It was obvious the department would try to reduce the subsidy. Expenditure was an uncertain item, and if the board was going to meet all the requirements outlined by the chairman it would need the money.
