Vice-Regal. His Excellency the Governor-General was present at the annual meeting of the Dominion Council of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association yesterday morning. Subsequently his Excellency presided at a meeting of the Executive Council. The Hon. Adam Hamilton, Leader of the Opposition, left Wellington by the steamer express last night on his way to Invercargill. Dr. L. C. Mail, Geraldine, is visiting Wellington. Mr. W. Machin arrived at Wellington from Christchurch yesterday. Dr. R. A. Shore, Director of tlie Hospital Division, Health Department, returned to Wellington from the South Island yesterday. Mr. R. L. Gillies, superintending engineer of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Ltd., is at present visiting Sydney. Mr. W. F. Bull, Canadian Trade Commissioner, was a passenger by the Limited express from Auckland yesterday. Colonel N. W. McD. Weir, officer commanding the northern military district, arrived from Auckland yesterday by the Limited express. Mr. C. W. Syddall, senior clerk of the Labour Department at Auckland, has been transferred to be senior clerk in the Christchurch office. Mr. L. V. Carmine, newly-elected president of the' New Zealand Rugby Union, arrived at Wellington from Auckland yesterday. Mr. Jacob Elliott, n member of the Railways Appeal Board, who has been attending the Wellington sittings, left for Auckland by the Limited express last night. • Mr. T. 11. Langford, No. 3 Transport Licensing Authority, returned to Christchurch by last night’s steamer express after a short visit to Wellington.
Mr. B. Allen, general manager iu New Zealand for United Artists’ (Australasia), Ltd., travelled north from Wellington last night by the Limited express.
Mr L A. Robb. C.M.G., president of (he New South Wales branch of the Returned Sailors’ and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia. and representative of tlie* Federal president of the league, Sir Gilbert Dyett. at the New Zealand Centennial Anzac Day celebrations, will leave for the north today. Mr. and Mrs. Robb will be the guests of Major-General Sir Andrew Russell on their way through the North Island to Auckland.
Mr. Lyall Powell, who has retired after 40 years’ service with the Land and Income Tax Department, was farewelled by the staff. A presentation on behalf of the staff in the form of a substantial cheque was made by the Commissioner of Taxes, Mr. J. M. Park, who referred to the valuable and conscientious service that Mr. Powell had given to the department and extended best wishes on behalf of the staff for his future welfare. Mr Powell expressed thanks, and related many incidents in connexion with 'the work of the department
