EGMONT RACES
Opening Of Winter Season BIG FIELDS FOR TODAY Form And Prospects (By The Watcheb.) Excellent fields are engaged at Hawera today for the opening of the Egiuont Racing Club’s winter meeting. There is a fair amount of form from the Waverley fixture, but several fresh horses are engaged, including a strong Auckland contingent. The going will be in good order and betting will be win and place. The most interesting of the fresh horses in the Tongahoe Hurdles are Full of Scotch and Streamline. The former is in winning form and should be one of the hardest to beat, but Streamline has had only one recent race, and will be backward. However at his weight he is a possibility to make a showing. Aussie Ra will be in favour after his forward showing on the flat at Waverley and Lady Stella, Blue Tiger and First Chapter are all prospects. In the Telegraph Hack the form prospects include Tavoy, Veldette, Counter and Clinch while Gold Dale and JJ lying Vixen might improve on their Waverley form. , _ There is a big field m the Hawera Handicap, and as the turn is close to the start, the inside horses will have an advantage. Majority is a fresh horse, but represents class, and cannot be dismissed while good races should come from Footloose, Alunga, Sleeveless, Kaiwaka and Rehearsal. Clarion Call dominates the Egmont steeplechase field. He has not raced since the ‘New Year, but he is .a class above anything engaged, and is in at a reasonable weight. En Tour will be backed, as lie won so well at M averley and the northerner, Enjoyment, who has been showing winning form over hurdles, should be prominent. Lady Stella, Red Sun, Brigadore and Lactose all ran well at Waverley, but if One Whetu jumps confidently he might be the hardest to beat, as he has the outstanding flat form. Disturbed might improve with Mcßae up. Good beginners and horses well drawn will have the advantage in the hack scurry over five furlongs. Zest, Sea Link, Judgment, Hum-a-Song, Counter, Tautara and Calliope are all likely. Tuatara showed fine speed at Manawatu, and should be improved with another month s work. . , . „,, ■While Amigo meets his field on relatively the same terms in the Mcßae Cup, the scale of weights gives him a better chance than at Waverley, as he is down 41b. With a good run he should be hard to heat. Classform is in winning vein and she looks sure to be in the picture, and Homily has good recent racing to her credit, while her previous form at Hawera was good Tidewaiter is a possibility to come to hand fresh, though he has not shown form for quite a period. Matarda has his win at Waverley t o recommend him, and Winsome Lu also is a form prospect. The field in the concluding event, the Tawhiti Handicap, is too big to allow all the runners an even break, and nothing that is slow off the mark will, hold much chance. Minority, Colossal Chief, Hunto, Kileash, Rnatiti, Kilometre, Veldette, Davilia, Young Charles and Filbert all have form. Colossal Chief is up 81b. from the weight he won under at Waverley, but the minimum today is up 71b. The following horses may be supported in their engagements: —
Tongahoe Hurdles: Full of Scotch, Aussie Ra and First Chapter. Telegraph Handicap: Tavoy, Veldette and Clinch. Hawera Handicap: Sleeveless, Alunga and Kaiwaka.
