TRAVEL CLUB PARTY

Members' End of Centennial

Celebrations

An appeal to citizens of AVellington to be more enthusiastic about their city was made by Mr. R. 11. Nimmo, at the Wellington Travel Club last night, when a large gathering of members was present, the occasion being an “end-of-centennial” party. Overseas artists had remarked about this strange lack of enthusiasm, he said, and the same apathy had been noticeable in the poor response made by tlie Wellington people to the Centennial Exhibition. A total attendance of about 4,000,000 people had been budgeted tor, he said, but it was more-likely that'about 2,500.000 would have passed the Exhibition. turnstiles by the final count. Such lack of response was discouraging, anil h-e urged people to “let themselves go” in these matters.

In addition to dancing, guests were entertained by a varied and well presented programme. The “Beer Barrel Polka” ballet in costume, by pupils of Miss Phyllis Oliver, opened the programme. Other items were as follows: Spanish dance by Miss Doreen Dickinson and Miss Joyce Levy, songs by Mrs. K. A. Palmer, accompanied by Mrs. Bernard ’Webb, a tap ballet “Centenary Steppers,” presented by Miss Phyllis Oates, a tap dance by Miss Mela McKenna, and the Blue Danube Waltz, 1840-1040, diluted by Miss Barbara Joyce Phelan and Mr. Robert Cheyne, (1840), and Miss Mildred Harris and Mr. Eric Lassen, Sydney (1040). Supper was served and those present danced til! midnight, to the music of a dance orchestra. The official table was decorated with trails of autumn tinted oak leaves and British and New Zealand flags were displayed round the walls.

Hostesses for the evening were Mrs. W. Burton, Mrs. Stanley Gyles, Mrs. D. Rodle, Mrs. Vernon Sutherland, and Miss N. E. Donovan, secretary.

Mrs. W. T. Brown. Pahiatua, who has been a guest of Mrs. D. J. Fyfe. Kelburn, left Wellington for Dunedin last night with her sou, Mr. R. Brown, who is to take up a new appointment there.
