Wages Increased By New Award An increase in wages of Id. an hour for .journeymen has been made in. the New Zealand Cycle Workers' Award, which was issued yesterday by the ('otirt of Arbitration.

In a memorandum to the award the judge. Mr. Tyndall, said the principal matters referred to the Court for settlement were classification. hours, wages, proportion, and conditions for assistants. Provision bad been imide in the award for the inclusion of cycle-stand attendants. The hours of work for mass product ion factories bad been more definitely specified. The minimum wage for trained adult workers had been increased to 2/7 J an hour. That increase restored- the hourly wage of those workers to the same relative position that it occupied in com-

parison with the rate paid to skilled trades before 1938—14(1. an hour below the standard skilled rate of 2/9. The maximum proportion of juniors in mass-product ion factories had been reduced to two to one. The two settles of wages for assistants had been discarded and replaced with a new settle which was in line with i ho scales now lining adopted in similar industries. A number of minor amendments to the wording had also been made.

The award will lake effect from April 29. 1940. and will remain m force for a year. Hours of work have been fixed at--IO a week. Overtime shall be paid at time and a half for the first four l-.-ours and thereafter at double time. The following .shall be the recognized holidays: New Year's Day,' Good Friday, Easter .Monday. King's Birthday. Labour Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Anzac Day. The following further holidays shall be recognized: January 2. Easter Saturday. and Anniversary Day in dis I riels where if, is observed, and where it is not observed some other day to be substituted.
