GOLF CONTROL
Wellington Club’s Annual Meeting ELECTION OF OFFICERS At the annual meeting of the Wellington Golf Club last night, there was one of the largest attendances for several, years. Sir James Grose, the club captain, who presided, in moving the adoption of the anuiual report and balance-sheet, said that the chib would be faced this year with substantial expenditure because of the flood damage which had eaten into the fourth fairway. The cost of .protective work would be about £6OO, which would have to couie out of capital. From the outlook the club was going to have a pretty lean time, and consequently the committee would have to go carefully. Mr. G. H. Swann, who had held the position of secretary for 13 years, had resigned, and the committee had grantee him a bonus of £l5O in recognition of his valuable services. Miss M. A ard had been appointed secretary-manageress in the meantime, and the incoming committee would review the position, and also consider the question of the appointment of a secretary-manager. The motion to adopt the report and balance-sheet was seconded by the Hou. V. Waid. , , . Mr S. Blacklev congratulated the club on the excellent attendance at the meeting. The finances of the club were very sound, and there was no cause for despondency. Mr. D. O. Whyte mentioned that depreciation of thij club’s assets should be shown correotly each year, A circular issued by the club captain had stated that Miss Ward had been appointed manageress and secretary. He thought this was a retrograde step, as most large clubs in. the Dominion were run by a managing secretary. The decision of. the committee to spend money left as a legacy by a highly respected late member of th* cluib savoured of throwing the money in the river. He would like to know whether the advice of the Public. Works Department had been sought in connexion with the river protection work.
The chairman said that the committee had sought the advice of the Public Works Department concerning protective works on the bank of the river at the fourth fairway, and the committee would see that the work was carried out as economically as .possible. The motion to adopt the report and balance-sheet was carried. On the motion of Mr. G. O. Subton, the valuable services given to the club as cluib captain over a number of years by the late Mr. J. C. Peacock were placed on record. Mr. E. O. Hales referred to the long and valuable services which Mr. G. H. Swann had given as secretary to the club during the past 13 years, and. on his motion, the club’s appreciation of those services, was placed on record. Election of Officers.
