Early Matches at Park.

The College Old Boys’ Club advised that it. did not wish to play early at Athletic Park on Saturday against University. “At this stage of the season when the winning of games is so important in view of the division of the teams in the second round, we consider that . clubs should be granted every opportunity of playing at their best. From our experience senior teams required to play at 1.30 do not usually come up to their usual standard. It is also rather difficult to understand the reason for this draw, as it is noticed that at both Kelburn and Anderson Park games are being played at 3 p.m. , ~ , It was pointed out that the practice of playing early games at Athletic Park had been appreciated by patrons and did not appear to inflict any great hardship on clubs, particularly with the shorter working week. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, Mr. Millard. Au application by the Scatoun and Rongotai College Old Boys’ Club to name its junior team, which was solely composed of members of Fort Dorset, the Seatoun and Rongotai College Old Boys’ Army team was declined. ' 'l’he Junior Advisory Committee advGi'd that Mr. A. D. Chant had again been appointed official recorder for the Griffiths Memorial competition, which would start on May 11. Referees’ Meeting

There was a large attendance at Monday night’s meeting of the Wellington Rugby Referees’ Association. Mr. .A. Hooper wus in charge of the instruction

class and field the interest of all concerned for fully.an hour. A discussion took place regarding tripping ami hip tackling. It was decided that if a player protruded a leg to, bring on opponent down it would be. considered a trip, even if the thigh was used for that purpose, and should be punished. Under Law 34A (Illegal Tackling), hip tackling is not tripping; nevertheless, it is in the referee's power to take drastic action should he consider it done dangerously, and a penalty inflicted under the above law. It was pointed out that where more than one ball is used in a game it is the practice of some players to select a particular ball for kicking. A definite ruling was given to referees on this point. After a try has been scored he shall see that the kick at goal be taken with ball with which the try was allowed; if a penalty kick be awarded the kick shall be taken with the ball that was in play at that time; in the event of a drop out, opposing players must ■be given reasonable time to get into position except where the drop out is taken with the ball that last became dead.
