ENEMY SHIPS

Seizure As Prizes Of War Regulations were gazetted yesterday defining classes of ships that may be seized as prizes by a collector of Customs on behalf of His Majesty’s Government. in New Zealand. The term "enemy ship” is deemed to include any ship belonging to or tinder tiie control of the Government or any national of any country that for Hie time being is (1) at. war with His Majesty; (2) in occupation of Hie forces of any country at war with His Majesty; ami. (3) under Hie control of any country at war witli His Majesty. Subject to certain exemptions, tiie following ships may lie seized: —(1) Any enemy ship; (2) any neutral ship engaged in rendering unueutral service; (3) any neutral ship engaged in a breach of blockade; (4) any neutral ship which is herself contraband of war. Exemptions are: (1.) Ships protected by British or Allied pass or licence; (2) hospital ships as provided by Tiie Hague Convention, 1907, also neutral boats having on board wounded, sick, or shipwrecked of belligerents; (3) enemy vessels employed exclusively in coast'fisheries or small boats employed in local trade, but excluding deep-sea fishing craft: (4) enemy ships while exclusively engaged on-religious, scientific or philanthropic missions: (5) enemy ships employed as cartel ships.
