MINES BLOCKADE NARVIK
British Announcement ASSISTING NAVY’S TASK i British Official Wireless. I RUGBY, April 28. The Admiralty tonight issued a description of two minefields which have been, laid off the northern coast of Norway. One field extends completely across the mouth of West Fiord, at the northern end of which is situated the port of Narvik. Ihe other field is laid near Steinvaer Island, and guards the approach to Narvik from the north. These fields arc laid to defend from submarine attack the British ships operating in Narvik waters and to effectively guard the approaches to that port.
The minefields are about 140 miles apart. South of Narvik, in West Fiord, the limits of the minefield are a line extending in a direction 126 degrees from Vaeroy Island light, <57 deg. 39min. north, 12deg. 45min. east to the mainland. North of Narvik the channels to the north-east and to the south of Steinvaer Island, 69deg. 10 min. north, 16deg. 35inin. east, have also been mined.
Presumably this action reduces the Navy’s task in blockading Narvik and will release some ships for other duties.
