OBITUARY

Mr. C. R. Vickerman The death has occurred of Mr. Charles R. Vickennan, who was for a number of years superintending engineer of the I’ublie Works Department. He was the third son of the late Dr. F. L. Vickerman, Nelson pioneer. He attended Nelson College from 1867 to 1872, and then joined tlie Public Works Department, lining attached to the party which located tlie Picton-Bleniheim railway.

Subsequently Mr. Vickennan located tlie Lawrence-Roxburgh railway, and was'then transferred to the Auckland district, where he served for many years as district engineer. In this capacity lie was responsible for extensive railway construction, Including long sections of the North Auckland railway, Frankton-Thames and Rotorua lines, and tlie northern end of the Main Trunk from To Kuiti to near Horopito. Though he was aged 84, Mr. Vickermnn was in tlie habit of taking long walks. He set out for one on Friday, anil apparently at dusk lost his way. Search parties were sent out, but no trace was found of him till Sunday afternoon, when his body was discovered at Ohiro Bay. He had died of exhaustion and exposure. Mr. Vickerman is survived by his sister, Misis Vickerman, and leaves a daughter, Miss L. Vickerman, Wellington. and two sons, Mr. Hugh Vickerman, Wellington, and Dr. P. Vickerman, Buenos Aires. Mr. J. A. Burrows 'Die death occurred in Napier Hospital on Sunday of Mr. Jesse Alexander Burrows, Carlyle Street, Napier, at the age of 65 years, says a “Dominion” Special .Service message. Mr. Burrows was in the employ of Richardson and Co. up to the time of his death, having joined.’ the firm in 1.916. He was a keen bowler, being a member of the Port Ahuriri club for many years. He was secretary for a number of years of the Port. Ahuriri Fire Brigade; he had a 25-year gold star. He leaves a widow, one son. and two daughters. Mr. H. T. Harle Mr. H. T. Harle, formerly steward of 'Wanganui Collegiate School, is dead, says a “Dominion” Special Service message. He was born in England and was chief steward in the liner Abhenic for many years. In 1911 he joined the staff of Wanganui Collegiate School as steward, and retired in 1937. In the last, war Mr. Harle was a conspicuous worker for many patriotic objects. . He was an enthusiastic bowler, and a member of St. John's Bowling Club. He was also on the executive of the veterans’ branch of' the 'Wanganui Bowline Centre. Mr. Harle is survived by a widow and an adult family. Mr. P. Murphy Mr. P. Murphy, Central Avenue, Gonville, Wanganui, has died at tlie age of 99 years, says a “Dominion" Special Service message. Mr. Murphy, who was born in Ireland, had lived 65 years in New Zealand. He was married in Wanganui. He is survived by six daughters and four sons.
