A deserter from the Napier Star on December 29 who appeared in the Magistrates’ Court yesterday was stated to have given himself up to the police in order to have a chance of settling in New Zealand without fear of arrest. He was John William Hassett, aged 27, seaman aud cook. Mr. W. F. Stilwell convicted and discharged him.
