WRESTLING
Conference Of New Zealand Union SEASON’S ARRANGEMENTS The 1939 Dominion amateur wrestling championships were allocated to Clirist-i-hui-eli at the annual conference in Wellington yesterday of delegates to the Dominion Wrestling Union. Mr. J. D. Willis presided over an attendance which included representatives of all tlie affiliated associations. All the union's officers were re-elected and tlie Prime .Minister, Mr. Savage, is to be asked to accept again tlie ollice of patron. In reviewing tlie past season tlie president said that though tlie uuniber of mutches had been fewer than in 1937 the average "gates" had not shown a decrease. Arrangements Imd been completed for first-class wrestlers to lie imported during the coming season, which would open in Auckland on May 1 in Wellington a week later, and in oilier centres in due course. It was expected that operations would be continued right through to the end of tlie year.
With legard to professional contests it. was decided to continue the system of eiglit-miiiule rounds, which was introduced last year, and no other clianges were made. A proposal was brought forward that the points should lie counted right from tlie beginning of a contest, but the delegates rejected ij_ in favour of tlie past practice of counting the points only from tlie final fall.
Tlie question whether the union should send representatives to tlie Olympic Games was raised, and. after tlie president had addressed tlie conference, the matter was hold over for further consideration. It is likely, however, that one wrestler will be sent to Helsinki, probably a heavyweight.
