PORTRAIT OF QUEEN MARY
Simon Elwes’s Canvas Arrives Simon Elwes’s beautiful portrait of Queen Mary subscriped for by the women of New Zealand, has arrived at Wellington, and was uncased at the Town Hall yesterday and placed in the Mayoress’s room. This portrait, lifesize, and three-quarter length will rauk probably as the finest portrait in the National Art Gallery. Though there is an ease and grace in the sitting pose selected, there is something regal in the poise of the crowned head and a majestic strength of conception proclaims the subject “every inch a queen."
The portrait is a symphony in lighter pastel shades, the dominant tones of the satin dress being ivory and parchment white, with a foggy neutral background of darker tones.- Her Majesty sits upright and alert, wearing her crown and the insignia of her rank, the strong imperious face, most faithfully limned, being warmed by the faintest flush with coiffure and crown looking “as though they belong. On behalf of the women of New Zealend Her Excellency Lady Galway will present the portrait to the trustees of the National Art Gallery at the Gallery at 8 o’clock next Tuesday evening. Invitations to the ceremony will be sent out during the week.
