“GOODBYE TO ALL THAT”
Absent Tenant’s Severe Losses IMPORTERS LOSE STOCKS “I said goodbye to him just before he left for the South Island on Monday night. Now that’s goodbye to his stock, and a pretty severe blow it will be,” said a bystander in referring to Air. W. W. Allan, manager of Whiteway and Co., manufacturers’ representative. Heading back to work was Mr. B. Hardie, accountant for Gouraek Hopework Export Coy., Ltd., when he overheard a remark that Victoria House' was on tire. But for other circumstances intervening he would in all probability have been in the building when the tire broke out.
Dominion Dental Supplies Ltd. moved into the ground floor only within tlie past month or two, taking over premises previously occupied by the Bruce Woolen Manufacturing Co. Ltd, One of the most serious aspects of the lire losses is that almost without exception the tenants were importers, who had alrady been hit by the import restrictions.
A subject for conjecture among a number of onlookers who were familiar with the business of those whose stocks were destroyed was whether they would be able to secure fresh licences. It was considered that unless these were available they would be completely wiped out. Only just run in, one of the 'Wellington Fire Board's new pump engines was tested yesterday, giving a pressure of 700 gallons a minute. It was to have gone through a final test today. Thirt purpose was adequately served by last night's blaze. “We would usually lie holding classes, but I was teaching elsewhere,” said Miss Ward, of Hie Health and Beauty Movement. whose studio on the second floor of Morrah's building, 03 M'illis Street, was damaged, the ceiling being torn about by firemen to enable them to prevent the spread of fire from flying sparks and lumps of flaming material. Little other damage occurred.
