Rise In Price Of Onions Dominion Special Service. PUKEKOHE. .March 27. Locally-grown ouiouw have hardened 3/- a cwt. iu price since last Monday, today's figure 'being 20/6 a cwt., f.0.r., Pukekolie. This rules for both table onions and piekiers. The remaining supplies are now held by growers in their own sheds, ami it is expected that the quantity they will release at the present price will still be limited, though another rise in price may not take place for some time. At this time last year the current price was 11/a cwt. Pkikekohe carrots have risen from 5/to 8/- a sugar bag in the past seven days, aud parsniji-s from 7/6 to 8/6. Beetroot are now available, and are selling at 5/a sugar bag. Purlin cooking apples sell at 8/6 a 401 b. ease, which is Oil. dearer than a week ago. Delicious and Northern Spy dessert apples also bring 8/0. IJnes which remain at last Monday’s level are potatoes at 11/- a cwt., red pumpkins 7/6 a cwt., marrows 4/6 a dozen, rhubarb *l/6 a dozen bundles, and tomatoes 4/3 au 181 b. case. Cabbage plants are coming on to the market at 8/6 a thousand. The supplies of red pumpkins uro tailing off, but grey pumpkins should be available in about ten days.
White’s Electric Loss
A. loss of £.1295, after providing £1693 for depreciation, is shown in tile accounts of White's Electric Gold Dredging Co., Ltd. I West Coast), for lite year ended November 30. The loss is attributed to high working costs and to the amount of royalty and export tax paid. The dredge trailed 328,630 cubic yards in 50 weeks for a return of 15790 z., representing a recovery of 8.5<1. a yard. During the year Hie sum of £1207 was paid liy way of royalty to the owners of the ground upon which the company had worked during the greater part of the .year, and £957 in gold export tax. Owing to the action taken by creditors, it became necessary for the trustee for the debenture-holder to take possession of the company’s plant in September. Since the close of the accounts the trustee has paid all the interest, amounting to £397. due to the (irst debenture-holders, and has also made a reduction of 10/- a debenture to the holders. The directors anticipate being free from royalty payments after the end of April, when the dredge will be back on the company’s own area.
U.S. To Encourage Investment A Federal programme for business based on the “desire to create an environment in which private capital will be encouraged to invest,’’ was advanced by Mr JI L. Hopkins in hie first statement of policy since he became Lulled States Secretary of Commerce. Mr. Hopkins reiterated that there would be no new taxes, and that the Administration realized the need for releasing private capital for investment. He emphasized the fact that Hie Administration had shifted the emphasis of its policy from reform to recovery, mid that it intended, moreover, to promote that recovery with all the power at its command, lie offereu busine.-w interests the co-operation of the Government, ami asserted that in whatever instances Federal taxation tended to discourage the How of capital, Im was of the opinion that it should be amended. Mr. Hopkins declared that the Government was planning no monopolistic policies in respect of public utilities, which, he asserted, afforded a substantial avenue for investments.
