DIGNITY CAST OFF IN CENTENNIAL CAUSE
Mayors Compete In Draught Horse Derby
The Hutt Valley’s chief elective representatives and paid officials cast off dignity on Saturday afternoon to provide the highlight in the centennial celebrations gala comedy picnic, whicli attracted 3500 people to Hutt Park, Oue member of Parliament. Mr. 11. E. Combs, the mayors of Petone, Mr. G. London, Eastbourne, Mr. E. W. Wise, Upper Hutt, Mr. P. Robertson, the town clerks of Eastbourne. Mr. C. L. Bishop, Upper Hutt, Mr. B. M. Wilmshurst, Petone, Mr. 11. Firth, nnd Lower Hutt, Mr. B. Knox, and Mr. W. Hornig, chairman of the Hutt Park Committee and an Eastbourne borough councillor, deputizing for the mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. J. W. Andrews, competed in a draught horse race. The pace was restricted to a walk; nay rider allowing his mount to break into a trot had to stop nnd turn it round before proceeding again. The race was an Eastbourne stables triumph, Messrs. Hornig, Bishop and Wise filling the places. Mr. Combs Wise filling the places. It was a wtar turn, and all the riders, by entering into the spirit of the occasion, made it as successful as could be wished for. There was no pace restriction in the jockeys’ race, and two horses which had a good turn of speed for draughts fought out the issue.
The Wellington Trotting Club provided two good races, nnd the Petone Whippet Racing Club also conducted events.
The M.P. for Hutt. Mr. Nash, opened the gathering. Mr. N. T. Gillespie was chairman of the picnic Committee. Results:—

Golden Axworthy, 24yds. behind 2 Stepson, scr 3 This event wns noteworthy for a remarkable finishing run by First Shake, who wns well behind Golden Axworthy and Stepson a furlong from home, and then finished so strongly as to leave the other two standing. Crystal Chimes was several lengths behind the third horse and Rhythm and Rayon d'Or well back.
