WAIROA HOSPITAL Board Disagrees With Department’s Report Dominion Special Service. Disagreement with a report on the hospital requirements of Wairoa, presented by Mr. G. S. Reid, architectural inspector to the Health Department, was expressed •in a motion pas-sed at a meeting of the Wairoa Hospital Board. "Knowing the financial position of the district, all we can think of now is making immediate additiont,- to the existing hospital.” said the chairman, Mr. J. M. Taylor. “To think of building a new hospital in Wairoa at present D not good business.” On the motion of Mr. H. M. B. de Lautour the board decided to inform the Health Department that it could not. agree with the figure of 225 beds as the ultimate on which Mr. Reid premised his conclusions, though such a hospital could be built on the present site with the purchase of small adjoining sections for various annexes; the board considered that the factors of economy and locality rendered advisable the retention of the present site. Mr. H. L. Harker staid Mr. Reid's report was comprehensive and very illuminating and showed what could be expected of hospital boards. Salo of Polo Ponies. At a sale of polo ponies in Feildiug on Saturday Messrs. Wilson Brothers, Ngaruawahia, purchased at 103gns. a sixyear mare offered by Mr. G. Vercoe; a pony offered by Mr. Q. Wilson was sold at 25gns. Ponies offered by Messrs. J. Mackenzie and T. Gaddum were passed at Many of the ponies offered had been engaged in the tournament during the week. Bidding generally was slow, but many of the animals passed in at auction later changed hands bj’ private treaty.
Correspondence School Committee? A suggestion that, to keep country people appraised of developments in connexion with the correspondence school, a council should be set up in conjunction with the school along the lines of a school committee, was considered at a meeting of the provincial executive of the Southern Hawke's Bay Farmers’ Union, which decided to refer the question to the Dominion conference. The proposal is that the council should lie comprised of representatives of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union, the Counties’ Association, education boards, and the Farmers Union.
A. and P. Membership Decreases. The membership of the Manawatu and West Coast Agricultural and Pastoral Association at the end of February stood at 1952, comprising 277 life members, 1616 annual members and 59 junior members. At the coresponding date last year the total membership was 2041.
Wrestling in Palmerston. A strong financial position is disclosed in the balance-sheet of the Palmerston North Wrestling Association. _ presented to the annual meeting, over which Mr. G. Watchorn presided. Only seven professional contests were arranged during the past season, said the report, but practically without exception they were of outstanding merit and the support, accorded by the public was most gratifying. The association was represented by a team ot six at the Wellington provincial championships, and though only one member (D. Cudby) was successful in winning a championship the remaining five were runners-up in their classes. Thanks were extended to Colonel J. H. Whyte for hicapable management of tiie team at the Wellington championships. The report refers to the promotion ot Superintendent Cummings fo take charge of the Auckland police district.and records its appreciation or the assistance he had given to the association.
Jersey Breeders’ Field Day. The annual field day of the Manawatu Jersey Cattle Breeders’ Club will be held on Mr. A. Montgomerie’s farm. Kauwhata, on April 1. The programme includes a demonstration on Jersey cattle by the Taranaki breeder, Mr. S. G. Morgan, and an address, “Genetics in Breeding and Animal Husbandry," by Dr. E. Marsden, of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
