BIG SURPRISE BY ENTAIL

Awapuni Second Day RACE CALL AGAIN Sires’ Produce Stakes To Submission (By The Watcher.) The autumn meeting o£ the Manawatu Racing Club concluded at Awapuni on ■Saturday iu due, cooler weather, with a fresh south-easterly breeze. Some surprises were hi store for backers, Entail entering the winning list after a long series of "outs,” aud beating the well-fancied Peerless and Gay Sou iu the Taniatete Handicap. It was Mr. G. M. Curries meeting, as Submission, his first day's winner, also won the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes brilliantly. This- is the sixth time he has won this event, and the thirteenth occasion upon which tjie Koatanui stallions have provided the winner. Though the horses were not well fancied the wins were very popular, as the stable luck has been out for some time, and Mr. Currie has always been a keen and consistent .supporter of class racing. Race Call repeated his first day’s victory against the sprinters, this time over an extra furlong, and the North Island Hack Plate was won by Sudan. There was a large attendance, aud the totalizator turnover for the day was £30.035, against £28,367/10/- for the Saturday last year, an increase of £166 < 10/-. The total for the meeting was £02,979/10/-, compared with £48,846/10/-, an increase of £4133. The track was again firm and fast. After Trebor had won the concluding event, the Adderstone Handicap, an inquiry was instituted by the stipendiary steward (Mr. B. N. Sandilands) into his improved showing as compared with his first day’s form. The pay-out was held up, but after a brief deliberation the judicial committee reported that the explanation of the trainer, T. R. George, had been accepted as satisfactory. Hanover Improves. Ridden differently, in behind early, Hanover had a fairly easy win in the

hurdle race. Me would have been troubled more by the first day's winner, Sutiee, had Suuee not made a bad jump at the second last fence. In fact, Suuee would probably have won again. Consistent Filly.

Much better placed than usual in the early running, Pearl of Asia had no difficulty iu heading off the pacemaker, La Bru, in the run home in the Juvenile Handicap. La Bru in turn held off Mascones, who was prominent with her into the straight. Millament, also handy in running, was a fair fourth and then came Lutanist and Kriemliild, clear of the others. Lutanist drew wide (12) and did not begin well. He moved up round the turn but was never able to get within striking distance. Pearl of Asia was due, as she has been running very consistently. Kriemliild ran a fair race. Favourite Narrowly. Ridden just in behind the leaders. Red Cat ami Blonde Princess, to the straight, Ecstatic took on Red Cat in the run home in the Lockwood Mack Handicap and, though she won by only a head, she bad the measure of her opponent. They were much too good for the others, Auroras Star being a poor third clear of Copy Cut, who received an interrupted passage on the rails. Deficit and Blonde Priucesw did not run up to first day's lorni. Surprise by Entail. The win of Entail in the Tamatele Handicap was a big surprise, but he won well, coming with a phenomenal run home. Galteemore again essayed'an all-the-way wiu and was attended by Gay Sou and Peerless. This pair followed him into the straight, where Gay Son got a run up on the fence. They gradually mastered Galteemore and then, just as Peerless began to hold Gay Son. Entail swept up on the outer and beat them both. Galteemore was a good fourth, with the others beaten off. Siegmund and Cheval de Voles were always struggling in the rear. Entail has recently been showing improvement and. with his advantage in weight and years, was just too good for the three-year-olds, both of whom ran sound races. Peerless has greatly improved. The disappointment wan Siegmund. who ran nowhere near bis first day's showing. Submission All the Way.

The Sires’ Produce Stakes saw the fully penalized colts, Beaulivre and Beau Vite, unable to give the extra poundage to Submission, who put up a fine performance and gave Mr. G. M. Currie his third winner at the meeting. Submission led all the way and was attended by Beaulivre.

This pair really had the issue to themselves. Silver-Stick was handy in the running, and on'the turn Beau Vite, who had up to then not received the best of passages, got a good run up on the rails. Submission and Beaulivre drew away from Silver-Stick in the straight, where Beau Vite challenged. Submission held on and just won from Beaulivre, with Beau Vite making up his ground to be a length away third. Silver-Stick was well clear of the others. Submission’s 1.26 1-5 is the fastest since High Comedy's race record of 1.26 in 1931. Submission had this race won all the way. The showing of Beau Vite disappointed bis backers, but apart from a little early difficulty he bad every chance. He did not appear to run with the same dash that characterized his Trentham efforts. No doubt the pace set by Submission was responsible. Red Witch Unlucky. Sudan, favourite for the North Island Hack Plate, came through in the straight and just won from Red Witch, who lost an excellent winning chance by being forced out wide for her run home. She was ahead of Sudan entering the straight and she finished on again, but had given away her advantage. Birkology was a good third, with Settlement fourth. Settlement was prominent in the leading bunch entering the straight, but after having been last early he bad spent bis effort and could not run on. Sudan was a little fortunate to scrape home against Red Witch, and she was stooping quickly at the end, but by the same token she did not get a clear run and Broughton took advantage of a very narrow opening in the straight in which he might easily have got stopped altogether. Race Cali Repeats. The first day's winner, Race Call, registered very fast time to win the Longburn Handicap. Silver River, Aureus and Old Surrey led Lady Ina and Race Call. Old Surrey leading round the turn and into the straight. Lady Ina looked likely as they came into line, but Race Call then came through and won well. Big book got a nice run up on the rails from the rear to head off Lady Ina for second and Top Row finished on over the others. Race Call won solidly. Big Dook was one of the last into the straight and though he was lucky to get an unchecked run through it was a good performance. Lady Ina pulled up sore, but for which it is’ likely she would have held on long enough to win.

Trebor Again. Coming with a strong run from the rear, Trebor scored decisively m the concluding event. White Gold had just come through and beaten Slernehase, vv ho 1 au settled the leader, Te lluia, but iieill u could withstand the finishing run ol He bor. Though lie was beaten, this was an excellent effort on the part of Sternciiase, a three-year-old meeting the live-yeat-old Trebor on level terms.
