BIG EVANS BAY SEAWALL

Construction Work Begun

The city engineer, Mr. K. E. Luke, said yesterday that a start had been made with the construction of the big seawall along one part of the Evans Bay Road, a major work which may occupy the attention of many hands for the next four or live months at least.

This is the wall which will enable the widening to 40ft. of the bottleneck in the road between the northern end of the Union Steam _ Ship Company’s property aud Kio Point. The new wall will be what is known us a gravity section wall, meaning (hat it will stand by reason of its own strength in masonry, which will consist wholly of gravel concrete, without reinforcement of any kind. The total length of the wall will be about 1200 ft., which means that this Is the biggest job of the kind ever tackled on the waterfront by the city council.

The breadth of the wall varies with its height, and the height depends on the lay of the land. At the deepest part, the base will probably be 14ft. from the road level; but in other parts, where there are helpful foreshore rocks firm enough to act as foundations, the dimensions of the wall will be adjusted accordingly. It is not intended that the wall shall be continued above road level. It will eml flush with Unit level aud will eventually be surmounted with a tubular steel rail fence. As there is little- dry shore above low-water mark in tills part of Evans Bay, the work of establishing the base of the wall will have to lie done when the tide is fairly low.
