REVIEW OF THE ARTS

Comprehensive Historical Survey “A World History of Art.” by Sheldon Cheney (London: Cape). This is a splendid review of the arts of the world, past and present. Mr. Cheney’s survey covers the three main arts, painting, sculpture, and architecture, and also considers thoroughly the subsidiary crafts of pottery, metalworking. miniature painting and enamelling. His first concern is with the art of the West, but he stresses the importance of Egyptian art and the arts of the Orient, and gives them a full measure of attention. To this amazing and glowing panorama of man’s achievement with the brush and the chisel, a necessary background is provided by an account of archaic and primitive arts. This volume is obviously the fruit of many years of study, and it provides an informed, readable, and comprehensive account of the origins of the various art-forms and the extent of their attainment in their respective progress. The illustrations are numerous and well selected, and not the least of the book’s attractions is its freedom from objectionable art jargon. Dates are omitted from the text in the interests of easy reading, and find a place iu an invaluable index.
