Belladonna.
The belladonna is a funny flower, For when the ground is dry with drought She says to herself, "Ob, deary me. I think It time that 1 came „nt." Belladonnas are red or pink. Sometimes a lovely white. Growing up, they just have Howers— Then leaves come overnight. First it’s all flowers— Not a leaf at nil. Then it’s all leaves — Not a flower, big or small. 1 cannot tell When the belladonna's best, But I know 'Tis always gaily dressed. —Toi-toi (10), Paraparaumu. Guess What? We have a plant growing in a pot. We call it a camel; do you wonder what? Does it make you think? -I It seldom needs a drink, ' For that cactus likes weather hot! —Smiler (9), Carterton. » » • The Last Rose. Summertime will soon be ended, Nearly all the flowers are dead; But in one corner of the garden Stands a rosebush, not all shed. No more poppies red are blooming, No more daisies scent the air; But one rose, the last of summer, Tells of the gardener's tender care. .. —Goldytop (11), Carter ton, » * »
Marigold. Oh, marigold, your golden head Blooms all the year, when others are
dead. The. frosts you do not fear, Nor shrink from winds so drear— I like marigolds in our flower-bed. —Sniiler (9), Carterton.
Rosebuds. Out in the garden rosebuds I see, Smiling and blooming waiting for me; Pink little rosebuds, small little rosebuds, Under the fernery, under the tree. —Lucius (8), Wellington.
Two Pink Lilies. Two pink lilies in a tiny garden, Side by side they grew; Their sweetness passed unnoticed except, By a very few.
Very contented and happy they were, Until a bee came along; Whispering wonderful things of the world, Buzzing in story and song.
Those lilies stood straight and erect, Now wishing to be seen; They had their wish, for a man and maid Cut their stalks so green.
Then with some fern and other flowers, Made up a dainty bouquet; And what a happy time they bad, Admired on a wedding day. —Dad’s Cobber (12), Carterton. « * »
