ANNUAL SPORTS

Wellington East Girls' College One of the most important occasions in a school year, the annual sports are always keenly awaited by the pupils, to whom on that particular day falls the pleasant duty of entertaining, wild the staff, parents and friends. It enables them to display, as well, the benefits they have gained from participating in athletics. A perfect summer's day drew an unusually large crowd of spectators to Wellington East Girls’ College for the athletic sports yesterday afternoon. The sun shon brightly and the smooth sports ground, high on a hill behind the college, received a light cool breeze which made conditions ideal. The afternoon’s proceedings had the appearance of an informal picnic outing, with lightly-frockcd spectators watching events from seats and in groups on the grass. Rows of little yellow and black flags marked out the course and the girls added touches of colour with the vivid green, red, yellow and other coloured girdles, denoting their school house.

All events were well contested. Popular novelty races created amusement, for entrants and visitors, and interhouse basketball and relay races received staunch verbal support from excited house members.

Afternoon tea for all was a welcome and refreshing interlude and in serving it the staff was assisted by girls of the school. Official guests' at the sports included, Miss N. G. Isaac, principal of the college, who wore a mist-grey tailored suit and grey hat, Miss E. M. North, princi'pal of Wellington Girls’ College, wearing a navy ensemble and matching hat, Mrs. Knox Gilmer, Miss Batham, Mr. and Mrs. Stock, Mr. and Mrs. Leadsman, Mr. W. Field, and Mr. W. Fitchett.

Results of the events appear on another page.
