Six Candidates Chosen The Hutt Valley Centennial Celebrations Committee “Queen of the Valley contest has now tlie following candidates nominated, the colours being given in those instances where they have been chosen: — Women’s organizations, Mrs. J. Bradley; business and professions, Miss E. Darby (green) ; sports bodies, Miss Muriel Howe; motor organizations, Miss N. Whiteman (white) ; R.S.A., Miss Joao Cowie; railway and transport. Miss Muriel Griggs (red, green and gold). Manufacturers, preliminary contest: Lever Brothers, Miss Katie Coffey; Woollen Mills, Miss Hcppleston; Gnihn and Co., Miss Iris Neill; AV. D. and H. O. Wills, “Miss Capstan’’ (blue and white) ; Slippers Ltd., Miss Joan Gallager (blue and gold). Railways Committee Meeting. At the meeting of the Railways Queen Committee, at which Miss Al. Griggs was accepted as queen candidate, the General Manager of Railways, Mr. Mackley, said that he had had some experience of queen carnivals, ami felt sure that an organization such as the railways possessed would place its queen at the top of the poll. He had pleasure in starting the movement with a gift of a stag’s head, a 12-pointer mounted, which he would leave to their discretion to dispose of. It is proposed that the workshops should be open for inspection on some Saturday afternoon, and Mr. Mackley said he would arrange for a special train from Wellington, if necessary. Mr. Burton, manager of the workshops, said he was honoured by the keen interest taken by the general manager in the contest, and assured the meeting of his own personal support.
