POOR GAME SHOOTING
Review Of Year’s Sport In North Wairarapa
Dominion Special Service. MASTERTON, March 24. “We regret the unsuccessful year at the game farm with pheasants, but hope that the council will acclimatize such birds as the golden plover, woodcock, snipe and Tasmanian quail, in particular for this district,” states the annual report of the North Wairarapa sub-committee of the Wellington Acclimatization Society. “The shooting season this year was not very good ; no pheasants were shot, the quail seem to have disappeared, and ducks were not as plentiful as in previous years. “The fishing is now practically over and has been very hard, but it is extreme ly gratifying to say that, though a great amount has not been caught, there are a lot of fish in our rivers compared with a few years ago. In fact some good fish have been landed by some of our licenceholders —fish from three to 10 pounds.”
