ISSUE OF IMPORT LICENCES

* Manufacturers’ Thanks For Promptitude Appreciation of the manner in which applications for import licences were being handled by -the Customs Department, in conjunction with the Department of Industries and Commerce, was expressed at a meeting of the council of. the Wellington Manufacturers’ Association this week.

“Though .there have been hold-ups in certain lines which have been very annoying to the individuals concerned, licences on the whole have been dealt with with commendable promptitude,” the asociation states.

“At a recent meeting of the council of the association‘the secretary was instructed to write to the Collector of Customs and the manager of the Department of Industries and Commerce expressing appreciation of the courteous manner in which, the association’s representations have always been received by the officers of the departments concerned. “The general satisfaction expressed, however, was qualified by several instances of hold-ups in the granting of licences which had caused serious inconvenience, the reason for the holdups being difficult to comprehend. One line in particular involved bottle caps and stoppers. It is surprising the number of manufacturers who put their finished product into bottles and jars, many of which require fancy tops made of plastics. These at present arc not procurable in New Zealand, but no doubt will be manufactured locally in future.”
