IMPORT RESTRICTIONS
Effect On Power Boards The effect of import restrictions on electrical appliances and equipment for pofver boards was discussed by the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board yesterday. It decided to support the Waikato board's resolution requesting the Government that restrictions on Britishmade appliances be lifted till New Zealand manufacturers could supply the goods required.
The chairman, Mr. A. W. Press, said it would do no harm to support Waikato but he felt sure that wheu boards required equipment an import licence would be forthcoming.
.Mr. S. Blackley said this was not the position. Mr. Press: It has not been proved to the contrary.
Mr. Blackley: Some boards are stuck at present.
If the time came when the board required material from overseas the Min-ister-would have to give a licence; other wise the board’s progress would be retarded, said Mr. Press. If that did occur the onus would be on the Government.
Mr. Blackley said that local supplies were running short. He knew of one case where work had been held up because of lack of materials and men had beep put off. The Government was going to increase costs to boards by giving a monopoly of certain supplies to some firms.
