Waterside Workers’ Union From “The Dominion,” March 27, 1914. A meeting of members of the old Waterside Workers’ Union was called at. the Trades Hall last night, as a preliminary to an application for registration of a new union to be known as the Harbour Board Permanent and Casual Employees Industrial Union of Workers. It is understood that the meeting lapsed because the quorum of 15 intending members (specified for such a meeting in the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act) did not attend. * , *
Smokers generally, and those who buy aromatic tobaccos in tins in particular, will not be pleased to learn that the price of tobacco has been raised. It has been stated in the south that dark plug tobacco is not affected, but this is not correct as Juno is up 2d. per lb. Plug tobaccos of the following brands:— Victory, Diadem, Nosegay, Royal Colours, and Welcome Nugget are up 4|d-> and Lucy Hinton s]d. These small advances cannot very conveniently be passed on by the retailers, and it is therefore likely that the situation will be met by making the plugs smaller.
In less than au hour the French Parliament passed a Bill to prevent further vandalism on the battlefield ol M aterloo. The House of Representatives report stated that the measure was specially intended to satisfy English, sentiment.
