MANAWATU RACES

Fields For Today AWAPUNI GOLD CUP CONTEST Form And Prospects (By The Watcher.) The autumn meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club will open at Awapuni today and conclude tomorrow. The principal events for today are the Awapuni Gold Cup at weight-for-age and the King George and J. M. Johnston Memorial Handicaps. On Saturday there is the Thirty-first Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes for the leading two-year-olds and also the Tamatete and Longburn Handicaps and the North Island Hack Plate. Prospects are bright for a successful meeting. There are good acceptances, with plenty of class, the weather is set fair and the going will be in first-class order, with a good sole of grass. Betting will be single pool. The only bracket on the card is Lively Lady and Social Credit in the Cloverlea Nursery. . Riding engagements include: W J. Broughton, Colonel Bogey, Sudan, Taurangi, Red Cat, The Bigot. Russian Ballet, Pearl of Asia; G. R. Tattersail. Tidal Gift, Vascones, Tom lorn, Oratory Siegmund; C. G. Goulsbro, Floral Robe, Hunting Royal. Old Bill. Florence Mills, Inquisitor, Lutanist, Big Dookj O. Evans. Dainty Sue; W. .1. MeDoweu, Hanover; I. Rohloff. Southern Blood ; H. N. Wiggins, Beaupartir, The Crooner, Chevychae-e, Millament; W. E. Pine, (Varehi; S. Anderson, Strolling, Thasos, Deficit; B H. Morris, Ecstatic, La Bru, Snigger, Royal Chief; H. Callahan, Cuisinier; R. Ireland, Ilrazil, Bumble; J. Chaplin, Verey Lights; 0. Carroll, Riotous; M. Caddy, AVildfiower, Galteeinore; P. Burgess, Yed Prior. Hurdlers with recent form are Entheos and Hanover. Over the extra distance Entheos should be able to reverse Rangitikei and he meets Hanover Gib. better. liiotour? had a race at Taranaki, but may be a bit new yet. lied Rufus has been consistent and Southern Blood, though be has not raced since January, will have to be considered. The three remaining have not shown much form, but Sunee would be a possibility if he jumped right, as he will appreciate the journey. In the Autumn Plate Trentham running gives Cuisinierta good chance, and if Floral Robe repeats her form she also should have prospects. Hunting Squire showed some pace here last week and may improve. Snigger, Tom Tom. Yed Prior and Brazil should also be on hand. The form of Trebor and Red Cat is a good deal in advance of that of their opponents) in the Woodhey Hack, and both will be well supported. Esc-tatic is a possibility to improve on her form here, and of the others the chances of Golden

Flame, Eurotas, Hunting Royal and Deficit may be most favoured. There is a good field of 14 in the King George Handicap, and on recent running the most favoured division may comprise Play On, Big Dook, The Bigot, Dainty Sue and Entail. Galteemore may also ohow up. Queen of Song ran a fair race here in her only start, but did not come on as expected at the right end. She may have needed the race, and her recent southern form gives her a chance. Siegmund will have to improve. The Crooner will be an interesting runner. He raced only once this season, unplaced at Wellington in October. The Cloverlea Nursery field contains recent form horses in La Bru, Lutanist, Pearl of Asia, and Serennta, and improvers may be Aranui. Prudent Prince and Kriemhild. The form shown at Trentham may get most, public support, but both La Bru and Lutanist are smart. The ten in the Awapuni Gold Cup are all good horses, and an excellent race is assured. The favourites may bo the St. Legcr winner, Beaupartir, . and Royal Chief but it is impossible to dismiss the chances of any of the runners as negligible. Some of'the other three-year-olds are very liable to improve ns a result of their racing at Wellington. The race that Laughing Lass ran in the Thompson Handicap assures her of solid support in the J. M. Johnston Memorial, but Florence Mills is in solid form, and Rakahanga bass to be respected. Top Row ran one good race at AVe,lington, and if Race Call ran up to his best he would be prominent. In the Te Ma tai Hack the Trentham winner Yours Truly appears likely to run prominently again, as does the runner-up, Inquisitor. The distance is two furlongs shorter, at which stage of the running at. Trentham Sudan was making a bold showing. Other possibilities should be Settlement, Thrasos and Classical. The following horses may be supported in their engagements :■ —
