FROM DAY TO DAY

News And Notes From Town And Country

Two Birthdays Celebrated. For the birthday of her two daughters, Doreen and Winifred, Mrs. D. Birt, Molesworth Street, gave a pleasant party recently at the home of Mrs. G. Campbell, Aorangi Terrace, to celebrate the occasion. An appropriately decorated birthday cake displayed little iced shamrocks and love birds. Among the guests were Miss Molly Crowe, Mrs. S. Gordon, Miss G. Campbell, Miss Lucy Carlyle, and Messrs. R. Northrop. W. Malpas, E. Heath, H. Hanagan, M. , Power, K. Tahiwi, B. Petrie, J. Higgins and S. Gordon.

Pantry Gift Evening. More than CO friends were invited by Mr. and Mrs. 11. Beavis to a pantry evening recently in honour of Miss Dell Ferguson, whose marriage to Mr. K. Dickie will take place shoraly. The party was held in the Brooklyn Baptist Sunday School Hall and competitions and games were followed with keen interest by the guests. Pianoforte duets were played by the Rev. J. Russell Grave and Mr. Beavis and songs were given by Mr. A. Abbott. Good wishes for the guests’ of honour’s future happiness were offered on behalf of those present by the Rev. Russell Grave, who made reference to Miss Ferguson’s former associations with church work in Auckland. Gifts of useful and acceptable contributions to the larder of the future home were received. Community singing and supper concluded a very enjoyable evening.

Swing Club Party. Last night at her parents’ lovely house at Island Bay, Wellington, Miss Nola Duthie entertained the many members and friends of the newly-form-ed Wellington Swing Club. The session of ‘‘jam and swing” was informal and a delightful opportunity was provided for both the members of the club’s own band, and the dancers to practise and create new “breaks.” Miss Duthie served a delightful buffet supper and cool drinks, the latter being most popular with the guests.

The Queen’s Attendants. The Queen will be personally attended by a suite of three when she accompanies the King to Canada ami the United States in May. She has decided that she will require two ladies-in-waiting—a Lady of the Bedchamber and a Woman of the Bedchamber. Her dresser, Miss Catherine Mac Lean, will also go to Canada. There is little likelihood that her Mistress of the Robes, the Duchess of Northumberland, will go. Her presence would be required only if there were to be a ceremony of the type at which she attends the Queen in her official capacity. Miss Catherine Mac Lean, a young Scottish woman, who has been the Queen's personal maid since her girlhood, started her service in the Queen's family when she went as a sewing girl to Glamis Castle. It was Miss Mac Lean who robed the Queen in the gold embroidered ivory satin gown which she wore at the Coronation. Election of Officers. At the recent annual meeting of the Manakau 'Women’s Institute, Mrs. L. Staples was re-elected president and the committee elected was Mesdames H. Bryant, A. Bryant, Bowling, Dorsett, Evans, French, L. Jensen, Lister, Meredith, Martyn, R, Robinson, Shepherd, Willis.

An interesting talk on institute affairs was given by Mrs. Hume. Points prizes were awarded to Mrs. Mudge,l. and Mrs. H. Bryant, 2. Mrs. Martyn gained first place for “best bloom in the garden” and Mrs. Guerin was second. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames French, Long, A. Bryant, Guerin and Hill.
