Reduction of 6814 On Last Year

Figures showing Hie number of unemployed were released yesterday by the Minister of Labour, Mr. Webb. The return for February .11, 1939, including those on tlie register who are for health or other reasons unfit for employment, discloses a reduction of 6814 as against the corresponding figure for February 12, 1938. Compared with the position for last month there is a decrease of 418. Details for February 11, 1939, are as follows :— Registered, but not on relief .. 823 On sustenance awaiting placeament — On Scheme No. 5 relief 320 1143 On sustenance, unlit, for employment for health or other reasons, but. being afforded relief from tlie Employment Promotion Fund 7281
For the four-weekly jH-riod under review, the expenditure from (he fund under the heading of promotion of employment, as distinct front relief expenditure, is estimated at £492.710.
