PLIGHT OF FARMERS

False Conception In The Cities “APPROACHING A CRISIS” Dominion Special Service. WANGANUI, March 22. “There is a false conception in the cities of the great time which the farmers are having, but it is not there. Because city people are having a wonderful time they think everyone else is,” said Mr. Lloyd Hammond, group representative, at today’s meeting of the Wanganui provincial branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. “We are rapidly approaching a crisis in the farming industry in this country such as we have never had before, not even in the big slump.” Mr. Hammond said the Government was not prepared to reduce farming costs though it had been approached time and time again. He asked members to prepare for the New Zealand Farmers’ Union conference in July, which he said would be the most important ever held. A suggestion that a conference be called of the chamber of commerce, Rotary club and development league was made by Mr. R. Montgomery, who said that if the Government could not be convinced of the farmers’ plight the only course would be to place the facts before the public so that they could judge for themselves.

Mr. Montgomery’s suggestion was adopted.
