ROWING
Interprovincial Eight HOPE TO GO AS EMERGENCY Petone Old Members Day On Saturday (By Smoke.) Mr. A. E. White, sole selector for the Wellington interprovincial rowing eight, announced yesterday that as the result of the retirement from the crew of O. Wares (Wellington), A. E. Hope had been selected as ninth man. The crew is as follows: O. Clayton, K. Boswell, G. Cooke, P. Abbott. I. Carter, A. Andrews, D. J. Boswell and L. Hoskings. T. G. Kearns (Petone) has been chosen as coxswain; he has steered the eight on three previous occasious. Hope, who was originally selected, was not available, but circumstances have altered and he is now to make the trip. It is to be hoped that he will be included in the crew ou the day, as he is the best man available in the seven seat.
It is an open secret that the reason Wares resigned from the crew was because he believed he had no chance of inclusion in the eight and was merely being selected as emergency to keep on side with the club. The fact that when vacancies occurred in the crew he was noQconsidered lends colour to this view. Wares has now arranged to play Rugby for the Wellington Football Club in Christchurch at Easter. Otago Club’s Captain.
P. T. Jack, formerly deputy captain, has taken over the captaincy of the Otago club in place of W. N. Binnie, who resigned because of his departure for Wellington. J. Turnbull is now deputy captain, and C. E. C. Johnson fills *he vacancy on the racing committee and it. Baird the vacancy on the general committee. Old Members’ Day.
The Petoue elub will hold its old members’ day on Saturday. This will be the last official gathering of the season and a large attendance of members,-former members and supporters of the club is expected. A race, married men v. single men, is to be held and also the old members’ fours for the cup -presented by Mr. D. Fraser. There are still a number of club races to be completed, including the double sculls, open pairs and handicap singles.
Wellington Club. After a meeting early this week the committee of the Wellington club has decided to combine its old members’ day and its ladies’ plate day. Saturday, April 1. has been fixed as the date and entries for the old members’ fours will close this weekend. The heats of this race will be started on Monday night and on succeeding fine nights during next week to enable the final to be decided on April 1. Club Fours.
Four Welligton crews entered for the club fours and the races were keenly contested. In the first heat Manning’s crew had rather a hollow victory over Nicholson’s crew, who had a rather inexperienced oarsman in the two seat. In the second heat McSherry’s crew l>eat Wares’s crew after a neck and neck struggle by a length. In the final McSherry was slightly behind a little after the start and it was not till about a quarter of a mile from the finish that the crew forged ahead to win by a length. McSherry showed himself a promising stroke and will be in the running as stroke of the youths’ crew next season. Luke showed his fine judgment when, after picking his crew, he rearranged it in the best possible manner and himself rowed in the three seat. Both Sewell (who rowed in the lightweight crew this season) and Killalea (who was in the youths’ crew) continue to show promise.
