POOR DRESSING FACILITIES
Rugby Clubs’ Complaint
Dressing accommodation at some grounds used for Rugby football was discussed at the annual meeting of the Wellington liugby Union last night. Mr. F. C. Atkinson (Athletic) said he had visited most of the grounds used by the union, and at many the conditions were appalling. Teams playing at the same time had to use the same part of a dressing-room. The union should approach the Wellington City Council, ‘the Physical Welfare Council, and .the New Zealand Rugby Union for help. Mr. J. N. Millard said that the problem had been one of the main worries of the management committee in the past Credit must be given to the parks and reserves department of the city corporation, which had done its best with the money available. He agreed that many grounds were in a bad condition. Mr. J. Prendeville said the matter was raised every year for many years with the city council. The great difficulty of the union was that it could not spend money on grounds for which it had a tenure of only six months, and no security of .tenure. Mr. J. W. Heenan said the Minister of Internal Affairs had stated that the question of grants from the Physical Welfare Council would have to wait till a survey had been completed. The city council had established a fund to provide playing fields. He would suggest that the fund be diverted from the purpose of purchasing grounds, a purpose which would take many years to fulfil, and used to provide proper accommodation at existing grounds. The question was left to 'the new management committee.
