FROM DAY TO DAY

News And Notes From Town And Country

Beauty Bar in Dance Dall. A beauty bur for cosmetic cocktails has been started by a dance-hall manager in Croydon, states “The Dominion’s’’ London correspondent. It has been planned exactly like a cocktail bar. Girls sit at long counters while beauty experts ply them with cosmetics before they go in to dance. ‘’Many of our patrons conic long distances to the hall and their make-up is spoilt by the wind and rain,” the manager said in an interview. “More than 250 patrons have used the bar hi a week.”

The cosmetics available hitve been given the names of cocktails —there are powder brones, Manhattan lipstick, champagne cream. All the jars are cocktail shakers.

Pre-Wedding Party. The reception-room at the Pioneer Club, Wellington, was tastefully decorated on Tuesday for a farewell party to Miss Grace Lindsay, whose marriage to Mr. Ralph Moore, of Pokeno Station, Auckland, will take place just after easter. Contract bridge was ployed and supper was served, tht tables being artistically decorated with pale pink carnations and stat ice. Miss Lindsay, who was wearing a smart black taffeta gown, was the recipient of numerous gifts for her new home. Among those present were, Mesdames Mitchell, Anderson, Sandham Henderson, Cornelius, Whiteford, McGuone, Young, McAuley. Smith, Nash, Finch and Nicholls and the Misses Harvey, Isaacs, Barraud, Turner, Wittich, Whitmill and Lavy.

Distinct Nursing Guild. The monthly meeting of the District Nursing Guild of St. John was held at the Guild Rooms, Vivian Street, Wellington. Mrs. Osborn presided. Sister Collins’s report was received, also a number of letters from patients conveying thanks and appreciation of Christmas gifts. The members very much regret the resignation from the committee of Mrs. C. Corrigan, because of her many other interests. Monetary donations, for which sincere thanks are tendered, were received from the following: Estate, W. H. S. Moorhouse, "Wellington Hospital Board, Miss E. Young, and the Sanitarium Health Food Coy.

Farewell Tea. Members of the Berhampore branch of the Women’s National Reserve met at the home of the secretary, Mrs. Collyes, on a recent afternoon, to say farewell to a fellow-member, Mrs. Taylor, who will shortly leave for a trip abroad. Two other guests of honour were Miss Chatfield and Miss Murdock, daughters of members, who will shortly be married.

Competitions were arranged and rescitations by Miss Jones were much appreciated. Suitable gifts were presented to the guests of honour, who were accorded musical honours. Others present were, Mesdames Swanson, Linsday, Chatfield, Sen., E. M. Chatfield. Barrett, Murdoch, McMillium, Phillips, Rees-Mallett, and the Misses Taylor, Linsday and Barrett. Canadian Institutes’ Venture.

It is of interest to New Zealand members of the women’s institutes to know that Canadian institutes now have their own magazine. “Home and Country,” which will follow the same lines as the New Zealand monthly organ of the same name. Hitherto the Canadian institutes published short provincial bulletins, but the magazine is due to the inspiration of Lady Tweedsmuir, wife of the Gov-ernor-General of Canada. Lord Tweedsmuir (better known as the author, John Buchan). Lady Tweedsmuir is herself a well-known writer, and it is expected that she will play an active part in the production of the new magazine.
