News And Notes From Town And Country Dance At Foxton, Novelties in the form of; confetti,, streamers and snowballs, showered on •the dancerg, added to the night’s festivities at the largely-attended dance recently of the Foxton High School Old Pupils’ Association. The dance took place in the Town Hall supperroom and excellent dance music was supplied by Messrs. L. Mattar and J. Newton. Novelty dances were won by Miss M. Marriott and Mr. Doyle and Mr. Pene and partner. Supper was served by committee members, after which dancing was resumed till a late hour.
To Say Farewell. As a farewell to Mrs. Malcolm Reid, who is leaving shortly for England, Mrs. E. W. Guthrie, assisted by her daughter, Mrs. Dick, and Miss Margaret Guthrie, entertained the committee of the Mothers’ Helpers, of which she is president, at morning tea at her Karori home.
Others present were Mesdames H. Hall, Winton Brown, S. Lyon, J. H. Martin, McParland, H. Barns, V. L. Palmer, D. A. S. Ward and Miss Sutton.
Delegates Entertained. A large number of the delegates who are attending the W.C.T.U. Dominion conference in Wellington visited the Hutt Valley and eastern bays on Saturday afternoon. They were entertained at afternoon tea in St. Stephen’s Church hall, Lower Hutt, by members of the local branch. The branch president, Mrs. J. Lopdell, introduced the mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. J. W. Andrews, who gave the visitors a civic welcome. The Rev. J. Thompson Macky welcomed the visitors on behalf of the ministers of the district. Mrs. Hiett, Dominion president of the W.C.T.U. replied. Temperance Union.
The final session of the Young People’s Christian Temperance Union, which has been in conference in Wellington, was held on Saturday, when the following oflicers were elected: President, Miss E. Long; vice-presi-dents, North Island, Mr. E. Grinstead ; South Island, Miss Brittain; secretary, Miss A. Beck; treasurer, Mr. N. Sly; correspondence bureau secretary. Miss B. Vann; superintendent correspondence (Dominion), Miss M. Bradley; superintendent literature department, Miss E. Bramble. Further plans of work were discussed, and conference closed with devotions. Ninetieth Birthday. A party of relatives and intimate friends gathered on Sunday afternoon at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. H. Haase, Hamilton Road. Hataitai, to celebrate the ninetieth birthday of Mrs. Haase’s mother, Mrs. J. B. Penny, Lower Hutt, who arrived in New Zealand in the sailing ship New Era, in 1853. Mrs. Penny si«mt most of her married life in the Wairarapa, and has for the past'ls years made her home with her daughter, Mrs. WatsonMunro. Lower Hutt. Mrs. Penny’s husband predeceased her 2-1 years ago. Numbers of congratulatory telegrams were received from friends in the Dominion, also many Howers and gifts. A sou-in-law, Mr. A. N. Palmer, Island Bay, in toasting Mrs. Penny’s health, spoke of her great kindness and recalled pleasant memories of her life. Mr. H. R. Penny, Okinawa, Taranaki, replied on behalf of his mother, after which -Mrs. Penny ent the birthday cake, on which were 00 candles. One daughter, Mrs. L. W. Hawkins, Sydney, and a son, Mr. J. B. Penny, Darinevirke, were unable to be present.
