LATE MR. G. MITCHELL
Large Attendance At Funeral The mortuary chapel in Kent Terrace, Wellington, was all too small to [ accommodate those who wished to attend the funeral service to the late Mr. George Mitchell, D. 5.0., on Saturday morning. The mourners could have filled the place three times over, .and the line of waiting ears extended down to Majoribanks Street. A former chaplain to the military forces, the Rev. <J. 11. Isaacson, conducted the service. The chief mourners wdre Messrs. A. G. and J. G. Mitchell (sons), and Miss Aden Mitchell (daughter). The ipall-bearers were Messrs. A. Cowles (president of theJVeilington Returned Soldiers’ Association), J. J. Clark (president of the South African War Veterans’ Association), J. 1. Goldsmith (chairman of the Soldiers’ Civil Re-establishment League), J. Spence (secretary of the Wellington branch of the R.S.A.), G. H. Maun (representing the First Contingent for South Africa), and L. Price (representing the Second Contingent).
The Government was represented by the Minister of Health, Mr. Eraser, the city council by the mayor, Mr. Hislop, anil Crs. R A. Wright, W. Duncan and AV. Appleton. Mr. L. McKenzie represented the AVellington College Board of Governors; Sir Charles Luke, Messrs. L. O. H. Tripp, 0.8. E., A. Macintosh, E. C. Hale, and I’. E. Bailey represented the War Relief Association of Wellington ; and Messrs, jj. J. McGowan, W. Appleton, T. RBarrer and J. AV. Andrews the harbour board. The staff of the board was represented by Messrs. A. G. Barnett (general manager), E. D. Cacheniaille (engineer), and Jh F. B. Stevenson (solicitor). The New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association was represented by Mr. Perry, M.L.C., Messrs. S. J. Harrison (secretary), J. D. Harper (treasurer), G. A. Hayden, and A. T. Dunean, the Red Gross Society by Mr. M. S. Galloway, and the Salvation Armv by Colonel C. Walls and Major S. Hayes. Others present were: Sir Charles Norwood (president of the Wellington Free Ambulance and Winter Show Association), Messrs. R. Aldridge, D. ’Wilson, S. Munn, J. Nicholson, A. Johnson. B. C. Cull, J. Dilner (secretary War Funds Council), W. A. Armour (principal. Wellington College), J. G. Hughes, C.M.G., G. T. Hall. C.M.G., A. B. Charters, C.M.G., R. B. Gibbons, Andrew Fletcher, R. H. Nitnmo (Y.M.C.A.), J. Stellin (Auzac Mounted .Division Associationt. AV. H. Field, Janies .Marchbanks, AV. Mainwaring, R. A. Nicol (representing the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), F. Roffe (superintendent of the Free Ambulance). J. Dawson, W. Dutton (St. John Ambulance Association), E. Bull, C. Broad. Misses Isaac, Macartney and Grieg represented the girls’ colleges of Wellington. Mr, Isaacson conducted the service at the graveside in Karori. The late Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Renown Lodge of Freemasons, and the Masonic service was conducted at the graveside by Worshipful Master E. Brooking. assisted by Worshipful Brother R. Lawrie. The floral tributes were both numerous and beautiful.
