Hospital Board Requesl To Labour Member NURSING CONDITIONS Statements In Letter To NeAvspaper Dominion Special Service. WANGANUI. March 1.8. Because of. statements lie made in the Labour newspaper, the ‘'Standard,” Mr. H. Lawrence, a member of the Wanganui Hospital Board, lias been asked formally to make an apology to the board. The request is made in a letter, from the secretary ot the board, .Air. L. V Kerby, iu accordance with a resolution made at this week’s meeting of the board.
No comment is being made, by .Mr. Lawrence at present. He said that what he did was done in Ills private capacity, and not as a member of the board. Neither the board nor any member of it had any jurisdiction over his actions as a private individual.
Mr. Lawrence wrote a letter to the “Standard” of March 9, stating that conditions applying to the nursing staff of the hospital had been far from satisfactory for some time, and also s’tated that the efforts of the. Labour representatives on the board to institute an inquiry or to effect an improvement in conditions under which the nurses worked had been blocked by the “gag” which had been applied on every occasion that the subject had been brought forward. At a meeting of the board this week Mr. Lawrence was called on to make an apology. .
