TRAFFIC DANGER ON NEW HIGHWAY 1 The danger existing in the vicinity of Melling Bridge now that the Silverstream Bridge is open for traffic was illustrated by an accident near the corner of Melling Hoad and Western Hutt Hoad at 6.50 p.m. yesterday. A car travelling south skidded in loose metal on the unfinished part of the Western Hutt Board, and collided with an oncoming car. Both cars were badly damaged, but no one was ■hurt.

Now that the bridge is open at Silverstream and the Western Hutt Road, north of Melling, is complete, a considerable volume of traffic is using the road. Many motorists prefer to approach the road from Lower Hutt, over Melling Bridge, to avoid the first portion of the Western Hutt Road, which is under coniStruction and in a bud state. In parts it is too narrow for comfort and the dust nuisance is great. Some motorists, however, come on to the Western Hutt Road from Normandale, and meet those approaching it from Melling Bridge at the ifelling Road crossing. This makes a danger. as the road is' narrow at this part, and the gravel surface aggravates it. After last night's accident there was a hold-up of traffic which was cleared by Inspector A. J. Archer.
