Many Furs Worn. The smartest black ensembles were almost invariably completed with lovely silver fox furs. There were also some exceptional fox capes. Embroidery showed itself a favourite with both young and old, this medium, in braids, wool, beads and coloured thread, completing many a smart frock with an individual touch. Of hats, the high-crowned autumn varieties were most seen, and in spite of fashion’s dictates, the freakish styles were noticeable by their absence. One woman, smartly gowned in black, brought something of a midsum-mer-Ascot atmosphere to ~the lawns when she put up a dainty, frilled taffeta umbrella, also in black. The recent rains had brought new growth to the lawns, and they were cool and green, only showing a reminder of autumn under the trees, where the ground was partly covered with newly-fallen leaves. The stands were brightened with the scailet leaves of Virginian creeper. The stewards’ luncheon room was bright with brilliant scarlet and gold zinnias, showing to advantage against the white tablecloths, and the huge blooms of pink and yellow dahlias. In the. members’ afternoon tea room the exquisite dwarf orange kosmos, klondyke flare, decorated the tables. Always a quiet place for a smoke and a chat between meals, the lounge, with its restful green and cream colourings, was charmingly decorated with zinnias and goldenod. Choice blooms of pinktoned gladioli were used on some of the tables. The President's Guests.
