N.Z. AQUARIUM SOCIETY
Election Of Officers The annual meeting of the New Zealand Aquarium Society was held recently, the following officers being elected: President, Mr. W. J. Phillipps; vice-presidents, Miss M. Mestayer, Mr. J. Birrell; hon. secretary, Mr. C. W. Sievwright; hon. treasurer, Mrs. C. E. Stairmand; committee, Mesdames D. Mackie and J. Paterson, Messrs. T. A. Abbott and E. Simes.
The president gave an account of his recent visit to Taupo. Though undertaken primarily to examine and photograph old Maori caves and buildings, some investigation was carried out to determine the cause of the periodical appearance of large numbers of dead fish on the shores of the lake. The investigations were without result, but it was found that the small native smelt, which was introduced Into the lake from Lake Rotorua m'any years ago, are now established and breeding in large numbers, doubtless providing food for the trout.
